Capella University Offers Emergency Management Bachelor's Specialization

Online university now provides Emergency Management specializations at bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels

MINNEAPOLIS, August 1, 2007Capella University, an accredited,* online university based in Minneapolis, announce today that it is offering a new Emergency Management specialization within its Bachelor of Science in Public Safety online degree program, as well as a Master of Science in Public Health. Twelve new graduate and undergraduate specializations are also being launched in such fields as emergency management, retail management, school counseling, educational leadership, health information management, human resource management, information security, and project management. Enrollment is now open, with classes beginning fall quarter 2007.

“There is a growing desire in the emergency management field for college-educated professionals,” said Charles Tiffin, PhD, program chair of Capella's Public Safety program. “Top candidates will possess not only on-the-job experience, but the analytical, technical, and communication skills needed to respond to immediate disasters and mitigate the risk of future disasters. Our curriculum is designed to address those skill areas, and Capella’s online format can help accommodate the often turbulent schedules of emergency responders.”

Tiffin has more than 29 years of public safety experience and exemplifies Capella's philosophy of recruiting highly qualified scholar-practitioners for faculty and program leadership positions. Tiffin, who was a Fulbright Fellow in professional police studies, has a PhD in organizational development, as well as degrees in criminal justice and policy studies, police science, and fire science, and has taught management, criminal justice, and organizational culture and change classes for the past six years.

Capella’s Public Safety program now includes MS and PhD-level specializations in Emergency Management, Public Safety Leadership, and Criminal Justice, as well as Emergency Management and Criminal Justice specializations within its Bachelor of Science in Public Safety program.
